This device winds thread evenly onto a bobbin. As the crank is turned, the bobbin moves back and forth so the thread winds uniformly. Florence was a center of the textile industry, producing fine silks and woolens. This sketch of a bobbin threader shows one of many improvements Leonardo designed for the textile industry.
